For the second time this year dry weather greeted the riders for the final
round of the Winter Hare Scramble series at Monkton just outside Honiton in
East Devon. This new venue consisted of rough open fields with the odd few
acres of wood thrown in here and there just to make things a little bit more
interesting.

At 9.30 the Sportsman’s race started with two stroke riders going first
followed by the four strokes. A heavy morning dew greeted the riders and the
first few laps proved to be a bit slippery but as the race wore on the track
got easier to ride.

The top three in the Sportsman two stroke class were first place Peter
Newton, followed by Jason O’Dell and Lee Aldworth. Sportsman four stroke was
won by Chris Date second to Mark Brewer and in third place Darren Hodder.

At 12.30 the Expert / Clubman race was started. The two stroke Clubman
class was won by Jamie Paget followed by Tony Penhaligon and then Shaun Dayman.
In first place for four stroke Clubman was Roger Baker with Chris Honeywell
taking second and Mark Tucker in third.

The Expert class at the start looked as though it could be a very
interesting race with over 30 riders competing. When the flag dropped the
riders launched themselves straight up a hill round a left hander and straight
back down again. As the dust settled one expert was left trying to start his
bike, Steve Ireland. The first rider to complete a lap was the ever so smooth
Gareth Andrew but he did have Ian Mundell keeping a very short rein on
him.
As the race reached just over halfway Gareth Andrew had run out of fuel and
DNF’d Ian Mundell pulled out due to tweaking his dodgy knee. Steve Ireland
had managed to pull himself up into the top 10. Leading at this stage was a
trio of Cornishman with Jack Twentyman, Richard Penhaligon and Chris Dustow.
Following them was the championship leader of Wayne Mundell who seemed to be
liking his new KTM 300 and John Tarr who was yet again on new machinery.

When the race finished Jack Twentyman had won followed by Penhaligon and
Dustow. Championship winner Wanye Mundell was fourth with John ‘whats he
gunna be riding next week’ Tarr in fifth. Tim Carter was sixth with last
event winner James Jackman in seventh. Steve Ireland pulled himself up into
eighth place with recently up graded Michael Gegg in ninth. Mark Booker
rounded out the top ten.

Ride-it’s thanks go out to all the riders and helpers that managed to
help make a great day and a great series.
