Pit stops so crucial as Fraser snatches victory
The second round of the Worlds Apart-sponsored South West Enduro
championship hosted by Pendennis Motor Club was staged at a very muddy and
wet Trellowarren venue on the outskirts of Helston on Sunday 19th
February.
With the entry at a maximum 200 competitors and classes starting at one
minute intervals, it was the championship class who were away first to
tackle a tough and demanding course.
It was reigning champion Jason Fraser who appeared at lap scoring first,
with Gareth Andrew, Chris Dustow and Steve Dustow nose-to-tail behind him.
The first hour belonged to Fraser, leaving the Dustow brothers to battle it
out for the remaining podium places after Andrew went missing.
In the second hour of the event things started to change. Chris Dustow
briefly took the lead, then with pit stops coming into play, Fraser regained
the lead only to lose it to Steve Dustow on his stop. With two laps to go,
Steve pitted, leaving Jason and Chris through, and that was that, with Jason
a minute-ten ahead of Chris and Steve a further minute behind.
Being one of last year's top clubmen, Steven Jewell has certainly taken
the expert class by storm, proving that his first round result was no fluke.
He led from the start and finished nine minutes up on Somerset visitor
Charlie Richards who, in turn, was two and a half minutes up on Jamie Paget.
The clubman was a much closer story, with Chris Doidge just pipping
Richie Platt by less than a minute and Tim Cotton, after being in close
attendance early on, dropping off the pace to finish three minutes adrift.
But they were all passed on the last lap by Gary McCoy, who not only claimed
the "Clubman" open, but also best "Clubman" overall, and
all this after his class started a minute later.
Being the only rider to complete seven laps in the Four Stroke 250, Chris
Williams had a full lap advantage over runner-up Kevin Woodley, who came
through as the three hour flag went up, missing out on an extra lap, as was
third placed Mark Brewer, who was 30 seconds adrift.
With Scott Medlyn having his annual outing in the "Sportsman"
class and completing six laps, he comfortably retained the trophy from last
year, leaving trials riders Tristan Barnicoat and Ross Youlton to claim
second and third places respectively.
The Quad class certainly had a close finish with Peter Badge pipping
local man Keith Dawes by just 40 seconds and Daniel Gill pushing
"Scorcher" Orchard down to fourth position on his debut ride. But
it could have been so different if Micky Whetter did not sustain a puncture.
With 45 minutes remaining and seven laps on his score sheet, he returned
to the pits to replace the tyre, but failed to reappear and saw his
comfortable class win turn into retirement.
There were also title points at stake for the sidecars with a round of
the BSEA championship. With an entry consisting of crews mainly from Wales,
the Midlands and Essex, it was Cornishmen Andy Seward and Simon Rogers who
had the holeshot and opened up a 20 minute advantage over Graham Jones/Simon
Brown in the first hour.
By keeping out of the deep mud holes and returning consistent laps they
finished a lap up on Jones/Brown and retained the trophy they won at last
year's event.
Pendennis MC Ltd are indebted to a number of people who made the running
of this even possible: The landowners, Euro Tool Hire and Sales. Truro
Tractors, Cornwall Kawasaki. St Blazey Motocross, Andy Loos, working
parties, lap scorers and especially the marshals whose hard work kept the
event running in very difficult conditions.
